Taharah and Shmirah: What Happens to You Between Death and Burial?

In this session I will teach about the Jewish traditions of taharah and shmirah, describing what happens to a person in the time between death and burial. We will explore both the spiritual and physical aspects of this liminal time, which we will all go through at some point. I will be sure to allow plenty of time for questions from the participants.

I am a founding member of my synagogue's Chevra Kadisha, the group of volunteers who visit the sick, comfort mourners, and prepare dead people for burial by performing taharah (ritual washing and placing the body in a coffin) and shmirah (guarding the dead person between death and burial).
